While this one's impressive as heck as a noble steed to a knight's battle duties, here are our top 5 choices for dogs we would want to ride to battle on:
English Mastiff. These guys are the absolute tanks of the canine kingdom. A male can easily tip the scales at over 230 pounds. They aren't just tall - they are wide. Riding one into battle would be like charging on a floofy and drooling ottoman.
Irish Wolfhound. If you prefer a taller, more elegant "war-hound", this is your dog. Originally bred to pull men off horses and hunt actual wolves, they are the tallest of all dog breeds. Standing on their hind legs, they’re easily seven feet tall - perfect for looking a medieval knight right in the visor.
Leonberger. Imagine a lion crossed with a very friendly grizzly bear. These German giants were literally bred to look like the lion on the Town of Leonberg’s coat of arms. They have a thick, regal mane and a massive frame that makes them look like a legendary mountain mount from a fantasy novel.
Saint Bernard. Best known for Alpine rescues, these dogs are built for endurance and heavy lifting. They have massive paws and a barrel-chested physique that says "heavy infantry". Just be prepared for the fact that your "war horse" might stop mid-charge to demand a belly rub or a snack.
Great Dane. Often called the "Apollo of Dogs", the Great Dane is the classic choice for a comically large pet. They have long, powerful legs and a gallop that looks surprisingly horse-like. While they are famously "gentle giants", their sheer height makes them look like they belong in a castle - or at the head of a charging battalion.
